MCT BERHAD and SJK (C) Union will be organising a fundraising bazaar on May 21 and 22, from 11am to 4pm, at Lakefront Residence sales gallery in Persiaran Semarak Api, Cyberjaya to raise funds for the school’s construction.

During the two-day event, organisers will also have a pre-registration survey to compile data of new students. It will then be submitted to the state education department to kick-start the new student enrolment in 2018.

Another objective is to raise awareness of the school among those living in Cyberjaya.

SJK (C) Union was built in Ulu Sepetang, Taiping. In 1952, it was the first Vision School (Sekolah Wawasan) in Malaysia – combining a Malay, Chinese and Tamil school within the same compound and sharing the same facilities.

As a result of urbanisation, there were only a few pupils studying in the school in 2013.

To prevent the school from being closed down, the board of directors decided to relocate the school to a 2.4ha land in Cyberjaya, donated by MCT Berhad.

A total of RM14.5mil is needed to build a new campus. After two years of fundraising activities, only RM9.5mil has been raised so far.

Addy Tee, a representative of the school building committee, urged people to help out by joining the bazaar.

Coupon booklets will be sold at RM30 each and can be used for food and games.

“We welcome donations too, and they will be eligible for tax deduction.

“MCT not only donated the land but are also the top three contributors towards the school building funds. We hope other developers, especially those with projects in Cyberjaya near the school, can follow suit,” he said, adding that some developers were using the school as a selling point to attract buyers.

MCT Bhd chief marketing officer Teh Heng Chong said the school, set to be the first Chinese school in Cyberjaya, provides an alternative to the international community there.

“MCT Bhd believes in engaging and supporting the communities where we operate and we are pleased to have this opportunity to help the school to build its new campus in Cyberjaya.

“As a developer, we stay committed towards our philosophy in building sustainable communities.

“We believe the completion of the smart school will benefit the residents and community of Cyberjaya as pupils can learn in a conducive and stimulating learning environment,” he said.

The smart school will consist of a multi-purpose hall, four-storey administrative block, three blocks of four-storey academic block (total 36 classrooms), computer lab, science lab, football field, basketball court, two sepak takraw courts, security guardhouse and bus stop.

Since construction commenced a year ago, the progress is currently at 20%.

The project is scheduled to complete by 2017 and open for enrolment by January 2018.
